1. General Paving Blocks
Made of precast concrete in various shapes (hexagons, squares, hexagons, worms, etc.).
It functions as a surface covering to ensure a neat, load-bearing surface, and is easy to remove and install for repairs.
Commonly used on neighborhood roads, yards, parking areas, sidewalks, and public areas.
The texture is usually plain or has an aesthetic motif.
2. Paving for the Disabled (Guiding Block / Tactile Paving)
This is a special type of paving to guide the movement of people with visual impairments.
It is divided into two main patterns:
Longitudinal Line Pattern (Guiding Line) → functions as a guide for walking straight ahead.
Dot/Bump Pattern (Warning Block) → serves as a warning sign, usually installed at intersections, zebra crossings, or in front of public facilities (bus stops, elevators, stairs).
The color is usually bright yellow or contrasts with the surrounding environment to also assist people with low vision.
The surface texture is embossed so it can be felt with a cane or the sole of the foot.
3. The Relationship Between Paving Blocks and Accessible Paving Same
Materials: both use precast concrete mixed with cement, sand, and aggregate.
Installed together: On sidewalks or public areas, accessible paving is usually combined with regular paving blocks.
For example:
Main pedestrian path → regular paving blocks.
Special accessible path in the center/edge of the sidewalk → accessible paving.
Standard requirements: The installation of accessible paving must comply with international standards/SNI regarding accessibility so that the path is truly functional, not just a formality.
4. Benefits of Integrating Accessible Paving Blocks and Accessible Paving
Inclusivity → Public areas are friendly to all, including people with disabilities.
Safety → The tactile pattern of the paving prevents the visually impaired from getting lost or bumping into obstacles.
Aesthetics → When combined with a harmonious paving block design, the sidewalk looks beautiful and functional.
Ease of maintenance → Because it is modular, if damaged, only a portion can be replaced without complete dismantling.
